GSA Contracting Jobs & Salary Guide

Updated March 2026

The Federal Contracting Job Market in 2026

Federal acquisition and contracting professionals are among the most consistently in-demand occupations in both government and the defense/civilian contracting industry. The federal government spends over $700 billion annually on contracts, and every dollar of that spending requires acquisition professionals — contracting officers, specialists, contract managers, and procurement analysts — to execute it properly.

On the government side, the GS-1102 (Contracting Officer/Specialist) occupational series remains one of the most actively recruited series in the federal workforce. The Office of Personnel Management reports persistent vacancies across civilian and defense agencies, driven by retirement waves among experienced acquisition professionals hired in the 1980s and 1990s. Entry-level contracting roles at GS-7 to GS-9 start at approximately $52,000–$75,000 (plus locality pay), while mid-career GS-12 to GS-13 contracting officers in high-cost areas earn $90,000–$130,000 or more with locality adjustments.

In industry, contractors and consulting firms that support government programs actively recruit professionals with federal acquisition knowledge. Roles including contracts manager, capture manager, proposal manager, and GSA Schedule compliance specialist are frequently posted by defense contractors, technology integrators, and professional services firms. These positions often pay 20–40% more than equivalent government roles in base salary, though without the federal benefits package (FEHB, FERS pension, TSP matching).

Geographic hotspots for federal contracting jobs include: Northern Virginia and the DC metro (largest concentration by far, driven by DoD, DHS, and civilian agencies), Huntsville Alabama (Army and missile defense programs), Colorado Springs (Space Force and NORTHCOM), San Diego (Navy), and the Baltimore-Annapolis corridor (NSA, NIH, Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services). Remote work options for contracting positions have expanded post-pandemic but remain less common than in pure IT roles.

What Employers Look For in GSA Contracting Candidates

Federal agency job postings for contracting positions consistently emphasize three things: FAC-C certification (or demonstrable progress toward it), experience with the Federal Acquisition Regulation (FAR), and hands-on experience managing contracts or task orders. FAC-C Level II is commonly required for GS-12 and GS-13 positions with significant warrant authority. Level I is often acceptable for GS-7 to GS-11 developmental positions where the agency will support the candidate's advancement toward Level II.

Industry roles at defense contractors and government-facing consulting firms prioritize: experience managing federal contract vehicles (GSA Schedule, GWACs, IDIQs), proposal writing and capture management skills, familiarity with compliance requirements (72A reporting, Price Reduction Clause, subcontracting plans), and certifications from NCMA (CFCM or CPCM) or DAU. Prior government experience — especially as a contracting officer or CO's representative (COR) — is highly valued in industry because it provides insight into how the government evaluates proposals and administers contracts.

For GSA-specific roles (GSA FAS contracting officers, Schedule program analysts, and VSC support staff), experience with the MAS solicitation, eOffer/eMod systems, and Schedule pricing mechanisms is directly relevant. GSA also recruits heavily through the Presidential Management Fellows (PMF) program and direct hire authorities for acquisition series positions.

The GSA Schedule Contracting certification appears in the majority of these job postings.
